Let me introduce you to my little friend:
This is a Brother 1034D 3/4 Lay-In Thread Serger
I’ve been wanting a serger for awhile now, but was a little intimidated about it. However, it got to the point that I needed one. Someone told me that you can’t sew for a living without a serger. Now that is not exactly true because my grandmother made a living for over 50 years by sewing and I know she didn’t have a serger.
In today’s world you need one.
I researched the best one for the money. I knew I couldn’t afford too much and I didn’t want to spend the money if I didn’t know how to use it. Then I saw this video from youtube.com and I was sold. I like the lady on the video because her sewing area is messier than mine. This is not a professional tutorial but you can view many of the professionals on youtube.com also. I love that you find a tutorial for everything.
If you buy the Brother don’t buy an extra gathering foot because it comes with it and the blind-hem multipurpose foot.
Oh, it might help to buy a little book like this one:
One more thing, cone thread. I ordered it from Amazon and Hancock’s but if you can go to a store to purchase it. I wanted several colors and before I realized it I was paying for thread to two other shops and paying for the shipping for each cone. Not good. You can order several colors from JoAnn’s.
As soon as I get my house clean then I can get it out of the box and start using it. I’ll let you know how it goes. Stay tuned.
Love,
Territory Mom
P.S. Since I have been on the computer writing this post my son has already opened the box. Not good, except I did notice that there are 4 small spools of thread already on the machine.
I need to tend to this matter so I will be off the computer for awhile.
If you are looking for thread for a good price try http://www.atlantathread.com
Have fun with the new machine!
Wow, that looks like a great new friend. I wish I could sow, it would be so awesome to be able to make my own clothes. Thanks for the info:)
